Vis/island of Vis
The settlement of Issa was the first organised state in the Adriatic. A thousand years have passed since the first mention in writing of the Croatian town of Vis.
The fortresses and piles of stones testify to the fact that for a thousand years there has been a settlement on Vis. The remains of a theatre in the foundations of the Franciscan monastery on Prirovo peninsula, the ancient baths and the Greek cemetery confirm that Vis is one of the oldest urban centres in Croatia.
The town of Vis, in ancient times known as Issa, was founded by the tyrant of Syracuse, Dionysius the Elder, about 397 BC as a base for the Greek colonisation of the Adriatic Sea. The settlement of Dionysius was located in the part of the town which is now called Gradina on the peninsula of Prirovu.
In Greek times, Vis was so powerful that it established its own colonies on the sites of the modern-day towns of Trogir, Stobreč and Lumbarda on Korčula. The many archaeological finds testify to the development of Vis. You can see the most beautiful example of ancient art on Vis, a bronze head of the goddess Artemis, in the archaeological collection of the Museum of Vis, which is located in the Batarija fortress.
The environment and tradition have determined the development of the economic activities of the inhabitants of Vis. Because of the areas of quality arable land, especially the fields around the town, agriculture has always been the mainstay of the economy.
Viticulture has been the most important activity of the local inhabitants since ancient times, and the writer Agatarhid tells us "how the wine from Issa, an island in the Adriatic, is better than others". In addition, the rich fishing grounds in this part of the Adriatic have encouraged the development of fishing. Besides these activities, today services, especially tourism, are important.
