Sali is the cultural and administrative center of the island. It is situated on the north-east coast of the island and, according to written documents from 990, has a rich thousand-year-old tradition in fishing. It is known as the spring-board to Kornati. It is a place surrounded with nature and thousand-year-old olive trees, and has a very rich cultural and sacral heritage dating back to the early centuries of Christianity.

With its tourist facilities, vicinity to the Kornati islands and the Telašćica nature park, Sali is a unique place with a true Mediterranean atmosphere where lazing in the sun has been raised to cult status.

Besides the splendid parish church of St. Mary's and the churches of St. Roche and St. Nicholas, there are the ruins of the churches at Stivanje Polje, Citorija and Čuh.

Excursions, nautical tourism and sport are very popular here. There is a doctor's and dentist's surgery, post office, cash point, modern library with books in several languages and an internet connection, and a harbourmaster's office. The tourist attraction is the well-known group "Tovareća mužika".

The donkey races during the "Saljske užance" summer festival are unforgettable.
