Adriatic brown algae/Fucus virsoides
Description of the species:
Fucus virsoides belongs to the genus of brown algae and can be found only in the Adriatic Sea, especially its northern part. The body of the algae is 10-15 cm long and 1-3 cm wide, and is mainly dark brown to olive-brown in colour. It inhabits clean and transparent seas and is therefore a natural indicator of sea cleanliness.
Reasons for threat:
Pollution and degradation of habitat.
Protection:
The species is strictly protected in accordance with the Ordinance on designating protected and strictly protected wild species (Official Gazette 7/06 and 99/09).
