Poreč/Istria

Poreč/Istria     What to see in Poreč

Euphrasian Basilica
This is the most valuable cultural monument in Poreč. It was built on the remains of an earlier basilica with three apses in the first half of the 6th century, during the period of Bishop Euphrasius, whose name it bears.

Visitors' tours are possible everyday except during services. It is possible to climb up to the steeple and view Poreč and its surroundings. The complex of the Euphrasian Basilica is a significant  monument at the global level, which was acknowledged by UNESCO in 1997.

The Northern Tower
The tower was built in the 15 century along Peškera Bay, to the north-east of the heart of the old city. Today the perimeter is still partly preserved.
The Pentagonal Tower
This is located at the beginning of Decumanus, the main street, at the entrance to the heart of the old city. It was erected in the mid-15th century in the Gothic style, with a relief of a Venetian lion on the facade. Up until the French occupation, parts of the city gates were preserved all the way up to the tower.
The Canonica
The monumental building of the Canonica was completed in 1251. It is considered by many to be one of the best examples of Romanesque architecture.
Medieval Walls
With its walls around the peninsula, Poreč was able to defend itself from its enemies until the 18th century.
Istrian Council
Originally a Gothic Franciscan Church dating back to the 13th century, the Council stands between Juraj Dobrila Park and the Laginja Shore. The interior of the building was decorated in the Baroque style in the mid-18th century. On the ceiling, there is Baroque stucco with frescoes in medallions.
Marafor Square, the Forum Romanum
In the 1st century, the inhabitants of Poreč could pride themselves on having the biggest Roman shrine in Istria. The Temple of Mars, or the Great Temple, was one of the biggest in the Adriatic region.
The House of Two Saints
This small single-storey building was built in the 14th or 15th century in the Romanesque style. It is situated in Sveti Mauro Street.
The Great Temple of Neptune

The Great Temple, of which only ruins remain, was an ancient temple dedicated to the god of the sea, Neptune. It is situated in the north-west of the town near Marafor Square. The remains (part of the wall and foundations), according to historians, are of a temple that was the biggest in Istria, and date back to the beginning of the 1st century.

Gothic House
In Decumanus, the main street of the old town, there's a house where you can see two luxurious trefoils. This Gothic building was built in 1473 in the floral Gothic style.
The Round Tower
The tower stands near Narodni trg and was built in the second half of the 15th century. Since it is very well preserved, a visit to the terrace on the top is possible.
The Zuccato Palace
Matija Gubac Square used to be called Piazza dei Signori in Venetian times, but only one row of its buildings has been preserved, among them the harmonious Gothic and Baroque Zuccato Palace.
