Bačvice
The sandy beach in the centre of Split
Bačvice, or 'Baće' as it's affectionately known, has always been a favourite and popular Split beach, and not only among local inhabitants. It is much more than just a beach. It's been like this for at least the last hundred years.
Sporting moments have always been present on Bačvice. The life and cultural spirit of the city is also alive on Bačvice, and lives through it. Even the legendary Split Festival has been held on Bačvice, and in 1964 the fourth 'Melodies of the Adriatic' festival was held in the Bačvice summer cinema, which is till active today. On that occasion, the jury of experts voted for Arsen Dedić's song 'Kuća Pored Mora', while the public's vote went to Tereza Kesovija, Kljaković and 4M and their song 'Nima Splita Do Splita'.
The Split Festival later relocated to the Bazen Jadrana and the Prokurative, and Bačvice became a venue for smaller events or one on the way to nearby places like the 'Džaja' cafe (today called 'Ovčice'), 'Tenis' or the legendary disco (known all over the country) 'Shakespeare'.
