Krijal/island of Premuda
Premuda is an island in the Croatian part of the Adriatic. Premuda is 9 km long and 1 km wide and occupies an area of around 9.2 km². It is situated south-west of Silba and north-west of Škarda. It is the westernmost island of the Zadar archipelago. The island is covered in holly oak and underbrush, as well as olives, which have recently attracted more and more attention. Premuda has two harbours: the northern Loza harbour and the southern one where the new Krijal ferry quay has been built.
The island has a village of the same name (Premuda), which has around 50 permanent inhabitants. In winter, this number grows up to one hundred, while in summer it is around 300. The permanent residents are mainly pensioners, while a couple of younger people are involved in fishing, cattle-breeding and tourism. A shop, post office and school are open on the island during the winter, and during the summer another shop opens in Krijal harbour, as well as three restaurants and a café. The majority of the population from Premuda left the island in the early 20th century in search of a better life, mostly to America or larger Croatian cities. Premuda is connected with Zadar by a fast daily ship line. In addition, there is a ferry three times a week (daily in the summer). There is a certain number of apartments and rooms for rent, so the number of tourists is growing year by year.
Premuda is also an attractive destination for yachtsmen and divers. In the vicinity of Premuda, there are numerous attractive locations for diving, such as the popular "cathedral", which is actually a maze of caves of enchanting beauty. The wreck of the ship "Szent Istvan" is accessible to only the most experienced divers.
