The town of Vis is located in the north-eastern part of the island of Vis at the foot of a well-protected bay. It grew out of the former settlements of Kut and Luka, which became one entity in the 16th century with the building of the Church of Our Lady of Spilice.
The villages on the eastern side of the island, such as Zenka, Milna, Bargujac, Podstražje, Podselje, Plisko Polje and Marine Zemlje are all oriented towards the town. After World War II, the whole island became a military area.
Tourism on Vis began to develop significantly with the demilitarisation of the island at the beginning of the war in Croatia(1991-1995). In other words, it has only been 15 years that both the island and its town have been open to visit from tourists. The remains of the military facilities in the north-west and north-east of the Bay of Vis are witnesses to the stay of the Yugoslav Army.
During the last hundred years, part of the population has emigrated in search of a better standard of living. There are only about 2,000 people living in the town of Vis, and around 3,500 on the whole island.
Visitors, especially yachtsmen, are increasingly coming to Vis. You can see changes in life on the island all the time, but at the same time, Vis has kept its old, irresistible Mediterranean charm and life without stress or worries.
The fortresses and piles of stones testify to the fact that for a thousand years there has been a settlement on Vis. The remains of a theatre in the foundations of the Franciscan monastery on Prirovo peninsula, the ancient baths and the Greek cemetery confirm that Vis is one of the oldest urban centres in Croatia.
